Many of the well known large brand champagnes buy their grapes from various vineyards. But some of the 4,500 independent champagne grape growers produce their own champagne, commonly called Grower Champagnes. Grower Champagnes, while a smaller portion of the champagne market, are much more terroir (land/ location/place) driven with a distinctive taste of their area.
